My name is Ivan Castro. I’m a lettering artist, calligrapher and type designer based in Sant Boi, just outside Barcelona. For more than 25 years, I’ve worked with clients around the world on custom lettering, calligraphy and typographic projects for branding, editorial design, packaging, advertising, music and culture. My work is rooted in traditional calligraphy, drawing and letterpress printing, but developed for contemporary use. I’m interested in how letters can carry tone, personality and meaning — whether they appear on a book cover, a bottle, a campaign headline, a record sleeve or a logo.
Alongside my studio work, teaching has always been an important part of my practice. I have given lectures, classes and workshops in Barcelona, London, Berlin, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Tokyo and other cities. Today, most of my teaching happens at Barcelona Caligrafía, the school I run with Oriol Miró, as well as through master’s-level courses at Elisava and BAU. I’m also the author of The ABC of Custom Lettering — Korero Press, 2016 — and Lettering to the Max — Korero Press, 2018.
